Emma Hill Show: Profile | Artworks

Emma Hill is a figurative painter living and working in London. Her work encompasses still life, landscape, portraiture, interior scenes and quiet corners in small London gardens. Working from life combining observation with an intuitive response, Emma’s practice draws on the language and colour of the Post-Impressionists, Cézanne, Les Nabis and the Bloomsbury Group.

‘In my work I explore the essence of a person, a place or a set of objects through the language of painting, and I seek to give you just enough in a painting to allow space to find your own way in.’

Emma had an art school training in the early 1990s, both in the UK (BA Hons Fine Art and French at Exeter University) and in France (Ecole Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence) and later, part time at Heatherley School of Art in London and the Florence Academy of Art.

Seduced early on by the world of glossy magazines, Emma became an award-winning beauty and fragrance journalist and editor, writing and styling photoshoots for many years, yet painting was never far away. Today, Emma exhibits in group shows and independently. She is an elected member of Chelsea Art Society exhibiting with the society since 2018. In 2023 Emma was invited to take part in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year.
